I'm so sick of hearing about high gasoline prices. I agree they are high - sheesh I only get 12 MPG and have to use Super! Ouch! But HEY that's MY decision. You have a Suburban? Hummer? Should have thought about how much it costs to run it ahead of time. Oh wait, my bad, there I go thinking again.
So what can you do? Maybe you should move to an autopia.
What I am tired of are all these marginally-informed commentators and "experts" just mouthing off and all that comes out is empty rhetoric. What really gets me are efforts like "let's boycott this brand of gas for a day or a year and force their prices down".
Now, listen to me: You will never succeed. Consumers do have power in the U.S., but on this one it has very little to do with how much gas you buy or from whom. That aside, you cannot possibly organize that many people to actually make any kind of statistically significant impact.
By the way, did you know that the gas you purchase did not necessarily come from a refinery owned by that brand? Guess who determines the wholesale price of gas that gets sent to the stations? Yep, the refinery. And some are independent of brands, etc.
Here's a thoughtful analysis on oil and gas prices.
Here's something interesting on OPEC vs. non-member producers.
Speaking of non-members, Chavez in Venezuela takes another step at f'n with the big boys. Man, he's got some balls. Good for him. Not sure it's good for his country or it's industry, though.
OK, got that off my chest, I feel better now.
