I need a sedative

Ten Most Harmful Books of the 19th and 20th Centuries

Are we supposed to burn these? I have read all of them unless otherwise noted...You have GOT to be kidding me on some of them.

1. The Communist Manifesto
OK OK OK, Communism bad in most all of the manners it has been implemented. And, not really a reasonable theory. But does that make this a harmful book?

2. Mein Kampf
Ummm....the circulation estimates cited were a result of mandatory distribution....as cited for #3. Don't insult the German people this way, the book is clearly a pile of trash and written by a nut. Do you think that if they had read it before he rose to power things would have turned out the way they did?

3. Quotations from Chairman Mao
Read about 1/4 of it. Irritating, yes. Engaging if you live in a region dominated by war lords, civil war, poverty, and such? Maybe. A few reasonable ideas? Probably.

4. The Kinsey Report
I have not read it. That said...
Oh please. Whatever. And I doubt it really "suggested that sex between adults and children could be beneficial.”

5. Democracy and Education
Read about 1/2 of it.
God forbid we teach some people to think rather than just training a bunch of myopic engineers and typists. Hello? Critical thinking? What? Don't we want any researchers out there? Oh, wait, we don't need no stinkin' technology.
Oh wait! I get it! Most of the books in this list would be read by students in a liberal (and I don't mean a left wing/leftish/Clintonesque/Reagan Democrat) curriculum.

6. Das Kapital
Wait, isn't this the official manual of corporate America? I'm confused.
"...capitalists inevitably and amorally exploit labor by paying the cheapest possible wages to earn the greatest possible profits." Ummmm....I don't get it.

7. The Feminine Mystique
Have not read it. However, huh? OK, maybe a little extreme, but most books like this are and should be taken with a grain of salt and viewed in the context of their time, and what the underlying motivation/goals of the book are... How can womens' rights be bad? Confused.

8. The Course of Positive Philosophy
I read this one in college. The summary here is horsesh*t. It's that simple.

9. Beyond Good and Evil
Uhhhh....uhhh..."Here Nietzsche argued that men are driven by an amoral “Will to Power,” and that superior men will sweep aside religiously inspired moral rules, which he deemed as artificial as any other moral rules, to craft whatever rules would help them dominate the world around them. "
Wait, I thought they were writing about Beyond Good and Evil, not umm...well...you know...Cheney & Klan...

10. General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money
I have not read this one... But the comment "FDR adopted the idea as U.S. policy, and the U.S. government now has a $2.6-trillion annual budget and an $8-trillion dollar debt" raises my hackles (I did not know I had any!): Ummm, I know I am just a citizen, but didn't the debt go down in the last administration, and now climbs? Oh wait, military actions don't count. Even so...same trend.

oo, this list got my jockies in a knot! ok, we all know that's figurative here, I am wearing my kilt.
