Rachel commented about minimal gift-giving on today's earlier rambling post that included a piece on Christmas already being overdone. Well, here's an idea that's not very minimal, very different, pretty far off the wall, and I think very good.

Heifer International is an organization that, in a nutshell, gives animals to the poorest of the poor in impoverished places so that they can start raising them and barter/sell them and get on their feet. You pay a certain amount, they give an animal or a "share" of one.
There was a story on 60 Minutes earlier this year about a young girl now here in high school, whose family received a goat or two this way, it was really quite impressive.
