Yes Kids, I've lived in Texas for 8 1/2 years, today. Wow. This was supposed to be a brief sojourn while hunting for a faculty position. Whoops. And get this, 5 1/2 of those years have been here in Houston, living in this McMansion in Stepford. Well, that's sure as fuck gonna change, no more Stepford for me! 'ouisie, we movin' on up, to inside the loop!
Today I threw out four trash cans' worth of junk along with 6 boxes of CRAP that were still sealed from when they were packed in Dallas 5 1/2 years ago and moved here to Houston. OUT! OUT! OUT!!!
I love throwing things out, it's so cathartic.
I really like living in Texas. It's got such a huge personality, and people are just so proud to live here. And so am I. Yes Yes, our state government is a bit of a mess, one occasionally steps in somebody's chew-spittle, Lance Armstrong is from here, and Houston is a touch polluted and has hellish traffic, but I still really like it.
An observation I made not too long ago: It's fun and easy to be a Yankee here.
That said, here's what my speech was before I moved here:
Your Linguistic Profile: |
45% Yankee |
40% General American English |
15% Dixie |
0% Midwestern |
0% Upper Midwestern |
And here is what it is now:
Your Linguistic Profile: |
40% General American English |
20% Dixie |
20% Yankee |
15% Upper Midwestern |
5% Midwestern |
Oh my.
