I am always looking for the actual website of a restaurant in Houston, Denver, or Calgary for some reason or another. So I google it, of course, when the website is not obviously named (and they often are not). Over time, I have noted that I no longer get the restaurant on the first or second page of results. I have to go to some damned AOL citysearch site, or b4youeat, or some such, to find it. It used to be that those sites would have a link to the restaurant and you were set. Now, they do not want to you leave their page so there is no link.
Obviously, I know WHY this is happening: these other companies spend lots of time tweaking their web pages to come up first in searches, and of course many people do find them helpful, and sometimes they pay to come up first (well, in that preferred box at the top, so not really first). But the point is that the link right to restaurent is just as useful, if not more, than the CitySearch ones, etc.
Well fuck that. I hate that. It's not very helpful when there is very little useful information like hours or dress code, no menu information, and there are no reviews or only cranky reviews by some moron such as "they did not have chips and salsa" for a Peruvian place. Grrr. From now on, I will just find the phone number and call them, as luddite as that as.
